I have a strange weirdness crept into my system. If I open excel and use the file,open menu, excel excel loads properly but if i double click an excel file in explorer or similar window The toolbar and window title bar of excel load but then excel fails to load file and doesnt go any further...

Thanks Thornmastr I had a horrible feeling it may be the case so i guess i will have to write a program that index the files after i have manipulated them in access. Do you know if it is possible to use access to generate a fresh ndx file from scratch???
