You could use a StringTokenizer to do what you want I think. Here is a lift from the javadoc fro StringTokenizer...
StringTokenizer st = new StringTokenizer("this is a test");
while (st.hasMoreTokens()) {
println(st.nextToken());
}
prints the following...
