the problem you have is a LAN problem Local area network and I think you are correct with the cableing.
you may want to try a protocol...
when you set up internet explorer check the auto detect proxy box. right click ie icon, select properties at the very bottom then connections then lan and make sure auto detect is checked.if they does not work try aol keyword proxy server
