I have just upgraded our NT.40 network to 2000 based Active Directory. Now I am faced with upgrading our Exchange 5.5 Server to a new Exchange 2000 Server.
I took a look at the FAQ, and seached this forum but am still so confused. Is there a simple 1,2,3 guide on how to make this happen?

Thanks to all for your help. I finally got it working.
I did not know the name of the dns zone needed to be the same as my AD domain. I had set up the DNS zone to be local.xxxxxx.org, and our AD domain was simply xxxxxx.org (which was the upgraded NT domain name.)
Would there be a better way...
I checked and it looks like it has the FSMO role for the AD portion, and I can't tell for the Domain. I dont have a Schema.
When I ping it via the IP address, it just replies normally. When I ping it via its name, "ping ntserver" it says just says reply and gives the IP address.
What am I...

I am sorry but I dont quite understand. I made sure that the servers where listed as hosts on the DNS server, but I dont think that is what you are meaning. How can I check the SRV records to see if they were created? I just pinged from a DOS box using their server names...
We recently started to upgrade our network from NT to W2K. Upon upgrading the PDC to AD, we found that it took a long time to login. The delay was very similar to logging on with XP when the DNS settings are incorrect....long loading profile, etc.
DNS server is running on the upgraded PDC...
Our server is NT 4.0 with BackOffice 4.0 installed on it. We only really use the Exchange Server portion of it.
We would like to upgrade to Win2k Server and leave Exchange Server at 5.5 for now.
During the upgrade process, it says that BackOffice4.0 is not compatible with Win2k Server. It...

I am also having this problem.
We just got finished closing our open relay, and remaking the mailroot directory. Now I know that shouldnt have anything to do with it, but its the only change we made.
Also unchecked the "allow mail to be delivered to these domains" box on our SMTP...
Thanks!
Will do that immediately, since who knows now many NDRs are in the Badmail folder...it has been deleting for over an hour!
Can I do the same with the Queue directory?
Somehow we have been running as an Open Relay for the past month. I have shut down the Virtual SMTP server and restricting access like should have been done.
I am currently deleting the jillions of files in my Badmail directory. There were so many that I had to do it from DOS.
Could I have...
Thanks! I actually got my AD back online. I used secedit to bring them back. Woohoo!
Now if I can get that Exchange Server to fire up I will be estatic.
I found a bunch of files that the hacker dropped into my C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc directory. They include stuff like firedaemon...
Sorry. No backup. We just got everything back online last Friday.
Of course, next time we will. What do I need to be sure to back up so I can restore the AD?
Thanks,
Mark
Last week we were hacked and I posted here-
thread96-440877 installed a fresh version of Win2k Server and applied all the patches that Doomhamur said to do. This I have the same problem.
I can log on as the administrator to the domain on the solo W2K server, but I cannot access the AD. Noone...
Doomhammur! Wish I could buy you a beer. That is great info, and should help us immensely!
Thanks again to all how have shared their knowledge. All of your input is greatly valued and appreciated.

We use DSL to the Internet with fixed IPs for the LAN.
We use a Netopia R7200 SDSL Router with a Covad ensignia on the top.
There is nothing between the Server and the Router except a 10/100 switch.
Thank you for the help.

Ack! F1lby! That must be what happened. The W2k Server has a public IP address, and we had no idea that all the shares would be visible from outside our LAN. That would explain why some of the uploaded files were in the c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc directory I suppose.
How can we prevent...
Thanks for all the info. Finally got everything reinstalled, but concerned that we might get hacked prior to installing a decent firewall.
We can spend about $1000 on a firewall solution, but the difficulty is that we have people that travel with laptops that will need access to our Exchange...
Wow. How did they do that? I am about to do a full reinstall, but how can I detect/stop someone from doing this?
Thanks for your help!
Mark
ps - Does this mean that they had a backdoor installed? If so, Norton Corp. Server didnt detect it:(
