How many tapes do you have? 1 full week? I would just set up my media set so that after the job is complete the tape is not overwriteable or appendable until the next time it is available in the rotation. That way it just goes to the next tape in the library. No need to set up multiple jobs...

You might also look at your virus software. Make sure its not doing on-access scanning of the files as they are backed up.
