Motherboard died & needs replacing. First time installing a motherboard so I would appreciate any suggestions. Have always used Asus before (the dead one is P4SDX) but am open to any suggestions. Would like to upgrade the CPU as well (currently P4 2.4) and upgrade memory to DDR2 1GB (currently...
Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. Motherboard is definitely dead so I'll do another post requesting suggestions for a replacement. Just wanted to thank you!
Thanks for all the replies. It pretty much looks like the motherboard is the problem. I can't think of anything else it could be but just in case listed below is all that's been checked/replaced. FYI we have 2 identical computers (one working perfectly) so switching things between them has been...
OK, guys, need some more help!! I've put in a new power supply and power cord. I checked the monitor on another computer and it works. I also tried the video card on another computer and that works too. So, monitor and video card are both OK. I've doubled checked that the memory is in right...
Can anyone tell me if this sounds like I've got a dead motherboard? CPU lights (green & red) come on when I turn it on and so does the light on the CD rom but nothing else happens - monitor never comes on, eventually the red light on the CPU goes off and the green one stays on. I tested a...
I just installed XP and I am trying to import (from 98SE) my old Address Book into OE6. It tells me that it imported successfully yet when I check, the address book is empty. I had no trouble importing my old messages but somehow I'm messing up something with the address book. Can anyone help?
Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these two chipsets? SIS655 and SIS693? I've searched around and so far I've been able to find that 655 is Northbridge(?) and 693 is Southbridge(?). I have NO idea what this means. I'm actually trying to determine if I'm going to experience...
Thank you both for your replies. I agree, if it ain't broke don't fix it although I really appreciate your response, micker377, I wanted to know what these updates did. Under the circumstances I will do the IDE one because speeding up HD access is certainly going to be helpful. Thanks again.
I hope I'm in the right forum - I've no idea what category "drivers" fall under. If this is the wrong forum, please redirect me.
I went to the SiS site to check on what type of chipset I have and the Chipset identifier recommended the following updates. I have no idea what these are really...
Thank you guys! Really very informative replies. I think, for the time being, I'll keep this "no fan" card. I didn't realize that these fans could cause so much trouble.
Can someone answer the part about the drivers? To refresh, my question was "I have an Asus P4SDX with SiS Chipset. SiS'...
First, understand, I know nothing about video cards other than they let me see my screen, so I really need to hear from those of you who know your cards. I need to know if a video card with a fan is better than a card without one.
I had a Mad Dog Champion MX400 64mb video card w/fan. The...
I think you just discovered what happened. I checked over everything you said and, although the entry was in the Reg key, I found that scanRegistry was unchecked in Msconfig - startup. That might have been why the backups were so old, I'm not sure the Registry was getting backed up. In the...
Thanks, TekTippy4U, I've saved the instructions you gave me.
If I understand you correctly, before I make "life altering changes to my PC" I can export the .reg file to C:\ and then if I run into a problem I can boot to C:\ and type what you gave me and it will restore the same .reg copy I saved...
It's OK, wolluf, I know now!! Common sense tells you to map the drives but I was so concerned about losing my data that I didn't even think about it. All's well that ends well. I'll know better next time!
Thanks for your help.
Hi, thanks for answering. I'm using Win98 and I've got 512MB (someone else said it might be lack of memory but I don't think that's it - I'm using very little of it). I'm trying to import the Registry file in Windows, haven't tried it in DOS (not sure I know how!). I'm accessing the Registry...
Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on how to do this. The new HD is in and all is well. Just a bit of advice for anyone who's planning to do this and reads this thread. Remember to map the drives! That's the only place where I ran into a bit of trouble and ended up having to re-install...
I'm using Win98SE and before making any changes I usually export the Registry although I never before had reason to import it back. Today I tried to import one of those Registry files I had exported and I got the following error message: "Cannot import 'file path.reg'. Error writing to the...
