O.k here goes, apologies as this is long winded.
We have a fully updated/service packed Server 2008 setup with AD structure. We have approximately 600 users and 300 machines on a mix of laptops/desktops built by SCCM on Vista 32 bit OS's and the problem is as follows. Randomly if a user logs...
So, bit of an odd situation I have walked into.
Started a job a few months back where the previous IT guy had setup a dual boot of Xp / Vista on all the office machines after adding a second hard disk to them all for some reason. Well to cut a long story short, one of the machines had it's XP...
Sounds like the hardware is coded only to use a specific HD, some manufacturers used to do this all the time so you had to buy spares from them and nobody else, Seems like its the case here well that or a faulty IDE controller.
Being a smarty and wanting to keep my job in the latest round of cuts I said I could configure a new setup at work involving a new public IP address / router / server to hook everyone upto.
I know how to do this, but I wouldnt mind some iinfo on least effort in maintenance on the cisco 2600...
Ever eager not to lose my job in the current round of shakeups at my company I put forward a bold proposal that made me indispensible, to do complete overhaul our network and get a new broadband line to go with it etc.
So far so good, just one problem I have done MCP's in 2003...
I get the same Xeno and I do not exceed monitor specs at all, Usually happens when i first turn on my monitor (only 5months old and done it since new) and when i load up video or games.
I get the feeling he wants the MAC address of the dsl/cable modem your plugging into the USB assuming you are.
The mac address for the modem should be on the casing of it somewhere or printed on the box, at least mine was.
1: SATA requires an add-on power cable adapter with the sata style connector from a molex and sata drive obviously requires the mobo --> drive SATA style cable.
2: If xp is Patched up to service pack 1 or higher it should pick up the drive np and as its full size if >140gb but if its standard...
O.k need to do a few checklist things.
1:remove the battery and try again just using power from the wall and see if problem persists.
2:Listen carefully are the fans powering on / or try seeing if they are expelling air through the vents.
3:Is there any kind of POST screen/any display at all...
I used to do drive hotplugging a lot, not with Serial ATA that plain just fouls up, It's just like plugging in a USB drive while the machine is on, obviously leave the drive bolted in its bay and just push the cable in when your ready.
Poor mans caddy idea just be careful as I said.
Not really a help here but, Those IBM drives were also known as DEATHstars as they died at a phenomenal rate and if it lasted this long you have been pretty durn lucky.
One thing I may suggest although not in itself without risk is hotplugging(connecting up) the drive in after your machine has...
Yeh i would of said CMOS jumper as well.
Also check you have the P4 connector plugged in by the CPU most people who come to me miss that connector or in the case of newer machines that have mobo's with 24pin power connectors on the mobo instead of atx style 20pin they plug the p4 into the end of...
You wouldnt happen to have an nvidia card and just installed the latest drivers would you? because they caused video playback to go fubar just as you described, just downgrade to a previous driver version and everything is fine again.
Once ya get into XP, apply at least SP1 updates and go:
settings
control panel
administrator tools
computer management
storage
disk management
you can then see the unused space in a neat little pile and you can format it as an extra drive, if you have some partition software like partition...
Graphics card is definetly not your bottleneck, well it is a bottleneck but not in this case.
Have a firewall installed by any chance?, that may well choke your connection while it loads in the stuff, other option try forcing flash/shockwave/java updates as most stuff uses 1 of those to show...
Well judging by that motherboard unless you intend to play battlefield 2 on low settings with 16 players max it really just wont cut the mustard.
my fiance has a 3200+ (@2.4ghz) 1.5gb of ram, radeon 9800xt and the game takes ages to load and when it does more than 32 player games start to kill...
Have you perchance just installed the latest nvidia drivers?, if so the same thing happened to me, i reverted to the beta drivers they have on www.nvidia.com and everything is back to normal now.
Have you updated gfx card drivers?
Failing that do a system wipe and reinstall, seems to be a quirk in windows maybe caused by a registry line being messed up or something similar. Seems like a fairly minor but annoying thing all depends how much it annoys you ;).
Basically some viruses and malware make copies of explorer.exe that are dodgy and make the system fall over all the time.
Latest one to do this is i have seen is called Smitfraud it basically hijacks and cocks up your machine but gives you a link to a program that can fix it for a price...
