Boot from a startup diskette and look at drive c: to be sure you actually installed the os.If you did then run f-disk and be sure you made the partition active. You must have an active partition to boot. Hope this helps.
Many thanks to all. Problem solved. Replaced hard drive. Don't ask me why but replacing hard drive corrected problem. Trouble followed hard drive to another system.Thanks again.
Thanks for the efforts even tho none helped. Final solution was to replace the HD. This drive also failed in another Compaq 575E the same way. All diag & lowlevel format worked error free on the drive. Can't explain it & don't care now that it works.

I have been having problems, mainly on Compaqs, with W95SR2 & W98SE failing to startup after installation. The install goes error free but after removing diskette & restarting the system hangs with the W95 or W98,as the case may be, logo screen displayed and that's all she wrote. System locks up...
