I had a similar problem once, and it ended up being nmb on the Linux box was not working properly. Go to the Windows box and type nbtstat -a LINUX_MACHINE where LINUX_MACHINE is the name of the Linux Box as defined on the Windows 2000 machine. See if it returns the proper answer.
