XML to EDI would be tough because of the field tagging. You would have to first establish field names to X12 values. It is easier to go from EDI to XML and estabish a naming convention.

If you are in retail I would look at UCC (and UCCNet), and VICS standards. Most of your suppliers are probably familiar with these iniatives. The trucking industry is very heavy into EDI and getting shipping status from the big carriers is usually batch EDI.

Most traditional EDI translator products will conver EDI to XML. For example Microsoft Biztalk can recieve EDI and it coverts it to XML. You need to create a schema for each type of transaction which can be done with our product Edifix.
