    ick, Solaris 9 seems to have huge problems.

    Now, I'm no expert, but I would guess the keyword to your problem would be the 'Beta' part of Gnome 2. I've seen some funk with Sol 8 and Gnome 2 Beta (from Sun site). Things like crossed CDE and Gnome desktops (both Gnome and CDE panels, backgrounds, etc...) when logging in to Gnome, as well...
