Your PBX probably doesn't support any handshaking on the CDR port anyway - most likely the port can be configured as a transmit only device depending on your switch hardware - there should be no need to allow bidirectional communication on the port anyway... but you should have no trouble using...
A "smart jack" is a normally passive device used at the demarcation point in a customer premise, that is used to test T-1 circuits via loopback from the CO. A code is sent down the T-1 from the CO to engage the loopback function and it is automatically reset after the loopback...
1. Switched 56K service is digital.
2. Transmit goes to receive to loopback a signal.
3. Chances are better for you if you use the loopback feature of the terminating hardware which receives this circuit at your location.

IIRC, REN = Ringer Equivalency Number. Essentially the number of ringers connectable and simultaneously ringable on a single line. There is a measurement of the ringer frequency response (Hz) designated by letters but I think there are only a few choices. FCC certification spec.
