Addition:
The other existing Nforce Motherboard (also quite new) is the MSI K7N420 ... might be a bit cheaper ($ 175 ??) with comparable features. However, documentation is supposed to be really bad (see notes here)

Maybe it's the monitor / settings???
- fixed frequency monitor (no multisync)
- display refresh in Windows set too high / monitor not automatically recognized (check the kHZ value, should be in the monitor's documentation)
If so, it might cause the symptoms you menioned.

I encountered the same on my brand-new Plextor PX2410 with Nero 5.5 in Win2K.
It's the only CD drive in my PC set as master on the secondary IDE drive (so I didn't burn 'on the fly', of course).
Didn't give it too much consideration, took one more re-boot to solve ;-)

Just got the brand-new ASUS A7N266 with an XP 1600 Athlon chip.
Features onboard video (GeForce II), Audio (Dolby 5.1) and network / modem (caution - there are several versions, mine doesn't have the onboard network/modem)
System performance is really good - definitely high-end with...
Problem solved ...
I had accidentally overclocked the chip ... as it's an XP 1600 unit, I set the FSB to 150 to get a 1570 MHZ CPU speed. (That'd be an XP 1800 unit then ;))
... 146 works just fine ...

Hi, I bought the board and assembled the PC this week ... looks good :-)
Only problem I have is with the onboard sound driver - Win 98 SE and 2K both tend to hang up very shortly after starting a game (tried NFS5, Commandos2 so far) ... any ideas???
Tried the MS q242937 hotfix, didn't...
