reddish color in greyscale
The problem is solved. Even though color printing seemed fine, I noticed one color picture - it should have had an expanse of grey in it - but that area was rendered in monochrome! So I replaced the color cartridge and voila! - greyscale now prints properly. Hope others find this useful.- edroid

We are trying to print 40-1 inch square greyscale images on a sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper. But our printers - a HP Deskjet F300 and a HP Deskjet 882C - fail to print most of the images in greyscale.
