it's a 10,000 rpm, high speed drive.
It came from the factory with a lowlevel format, and operated, win 98, with the full 18 gigs in one partiton... with one drive letter, C, until I formatted it...

I've had to format my Seagate 18 gig SCSI HD.
I have 2 ways to reinstall the operating system, either with the SCSI utility that came with the SCSI adapter card or with, bootdisk, fdisk.
Regardless which utility that I use, the HD always partitons to an 8 gig primary partiton...
Maybe this suggestion will help to beat the ISP timeout...
I went through 5 major national ISP's last year, before I reached the conclusion that they don't need me and really don't care about my needs.
The major ISP's have the experience and the expertise do do as they please with their accounts...
OK... I ran scandisk from dos about 6 weeks ago when I installed a new main board, cpuand HD, but I just ran it again for good measure, took an hour and 50 mins.
No bad clusters.
But, my problem is that I have a unidentified program writing to the HD, so defrag keeps restarting after 1%. I can...

Screen freeze and have to reboot? or it just keeps running without ever gettings it done starting over and over again?
Did you try booting to safe mode and running the utilities from there? as SEFASKDFC said above... That worked...

But on the other hand... I work on this PC 10 to 12 hrs a day 6 days a week, I build websites and upload many megabytes of data daily. incluaing a huge # of graphics and binary files. I also do a huge amount of research...

Although you shouldn't use Task Scheduler to run a thorough ScanDisk or Defrag, you can use it for a reminder. Just write yourself a note with Notepad or Wordpad and save it, being sure to name it. You can save it were ever you wish, just remember where.
Then, in Task Scheduler, instead of...
OK, the HD defragged... in safe mode no problems!
It took 20 minutes, I haven't defraged for 2 weeks. I usually defrag at end of each 10 hr. shift 6 days a week, but haven't been able to!
I'm sure that it's a program on EIDE C: drive writing to the HD, because my D: drive is a seagate SCSI...

Not long ago, I saw a freeware download for a utility to locate hidden programs on the HD, but I said to myself...naw, I don't need that, Now I'm doing a search...

Never thought of that, I'm lazy and don't want to start uninstalling programs til I find which it is...
