Weird. Either you have a glich, or you tabbed out of it?
Just in case, try pressing the tab key, if that doesn't work, press the "f" key. Each time you press "f" it changes the view mode. Maybe your tools are just hidden?

It is definitely a clipping mask, not the pathfinder functions. Yes, it is the topmost. And the layers I am clipping are grouped.

Another way of doing this, is creating a shape, and scaling the shape and text together. You can usually guess pretty close if not exactly to the right font.
I actually find it useful. This function allows one to know that there are two objects touching without overlap.
This also occurs when you live paint -> expand. But the fake outline that is created does not print. It is simply letting you know that the two objects aren't connected.
