Thanks will try - people have also suggested that sometimes w98 gets locked in "I'm broke mode" - and does attempt to load anything other than the real mode drivers.
I'm going to look for the registry hack "noide" first.

I've done all the normal scandisc things - I'm not sure how far back the last registry will take me but will look at the creation dates.

Thanks Paul - No everything in the system table is free from !, the IDE channels specifically are fine.
The thing that is unusual is that the HDD and CDROMS are not visible at this point.
Windows states that the problem is that the real mode drivers are being used and I should load the HDD...
Just some basic things.
Does the PSU come up and its fan spin.
Most PSUs need a DC go signal, and correct load from the motherboard before they will come up.
If the system appears to start then stop within a second it may well not be seeing DC go.
As other people have said start from a minium...
