    I should add that I've assigned an IP address to the VLAN interface on the switch and I can ping that so I don't think that the problem is with the host.

    Thanks - I thought that the ports were configured for trunking by default but when I configured them specifically, the VLAN came up. I'm connecting a VMWare host to a Fortigate firewall. Oddly the firewall can ping the host but not vice versa. Any ideas?
