I mentioned this on another thread just a minute ago, but it applies to this as well.
Make sure "HP Imaging Monitor" isn't running... this "beautiful" piece of software causes all sorts of grief for network shares.
XP SP3 may have fixed your issue on the other machines due to suppression...
First of all... try chkdsk'ing the drive. If that doesn't work, you can give TestDisk a shot (beautiful software - works best in Linux, but there is a Windows version as well).
ChkDsk:
If your drive is given the drive letter g:,
Start > run > cmd.exe
type chkdsk g: /r
wait a while
win.

Quick question - have you got a Hewlett Packard AIO or Office printer in the office?
If your client computers are using this HP pos... make sure the clients aren't running "HP Imaging Monitor".
This software will cause all sorts of grief with network share-performance.
