Thanks! I removed the hard drive, and the screeching stopped. And now I know how to replace the drive. Problem solved.- Shadthelad

dead laptop is screeching
My Dell Inspiron laptop froze and I couldn't even shut it down without holding down the power button. When I tried to power it back up, all it did was make a horrible screeching noise. Am I right in my assumption that the hard disk has crashed?- Shadthelad

THANK YOU, Vacunita!!! You have solved the problem, and I think I even understand how this happened. When I followed the steps you outlined, I found that the WD drive had been assigned to Drive F, which is already assigned to a server. By changing it to E, I was back in business. Who can give a hand to a naive user? I have had a WD external hard drive for a couple of years, using it with a laptop running XP with no problems. I recently got another laptop, running Vista, and used the WD device to transfer some photos and music files to the Vista machine. All went well...- Shadthelad
