An MLT would be used if you want to increase the bandwidth to the ESX server. E.G 2 x 1Gb/s ports. BUT it does mean that the ESX server will need to be able to understand MLT. Which I am not sure if ESX supports this.

You could try and copy of the images from the working switches. (TFTP) But the boot monitor is very basic not sure it will support IP to copy up the image.
Not sure if Nortel do a binary image for the 5510, if they do you might be able to image it over a serial cable and using hyperterminal...
On the 5510 the password has to be applied to where you want to use it E.G telnet.
It might be worth connecting a console port to the switch and see if they have applied the login prompt to the serial interface.
I do not know of a way of recovering and getting control with out physical...
You might want to consider using LACP on your DMLT/MLT links. Code 4.1 and onwards I think. It load balances the traffic across the trunk ports better.
