The mystery of the shutdown crashes appears to be over now. I thought I'd post this message to advise those who had helped me what the problem and solution was.
My very long thread started some weeks ago was frustrating me no end in my attempts to resolve the strange crashing during shutdown...
Studuc,
I don't really have a place to load the file into.

Linney,
Thahks for the links.
As has been the history of my shutdown crashing, the various MS docs talk about losing permission to access things, and causing the shutdown to crash with the "winlogon.exe"...
Well, my old shutdown crashes returned after a fair number of days without them.
The reference is again to "winlogon.exe".
Below are the first few lines of the Dr. Watson log during the last shutdown crash.
I'm only posting these few lines, as the full log is quite large.
Can anyone tell...
Hi Bob,
Thanks for your reply
I downloaded Unlocker some time ago, but haven't had the need to use yet. I originally downloaded it for the situation when a USB device says it's "busy", and can't be safely removed,
I can understgand that it also can be used to remove files which can defy...
Bob,
I finally got True Image uninstalled. I did all the manual deletions, except for one Registry entry which absolutely refused to be deleted. It's an entry for the "scheduler".
A Ccleaner scan then picked up a lot of other Reg entries, and it took care of all of them nicely. Now when I...
Hi Bob,
I installed Revo. It does look interesting.
The program that has been a problem is Acronis True Image 11. It's been freezing up. It wouldn't uninstall via its own uninstall option. Nor will it REPAIR via its option. Nor can I Install it via its option. And Add/Remvoe programs won't...
Hi Linney,
I have not as yet tried this out. But it sure seems like it should work OK. And if it does, my scripts for synchronizing all my other stuff can take care of the OE messages also.
I did learn that if I imported the complete list of files from my main computer folder, that all...
Hi Bob,
The Revo program looks interesting, and I downloaded it.
Am I correct in that it cannot do its work if the program to be uninstalled was installed before Revo was present, as it won't have any install record info to go by?
Ron
Is there anything wrong with this workflow to keep machines synchronized?
I have 3 machines that I would like to synchronize to my primary system. I have the complete folder of all message subfolders copied to a USB drive.
1. On machine #2, go into the store folder for OE, and with OE not...
Very often a program will not really uninstall properly via the usual Windows/Add Remove programs listing, or even the Uninstall capability of programs like Ccleaner.
To do the job manually, it's usually necessary to delete the complete program folder, and then remove all the Registry entries...
Hi Linney,
Thanks as usual for your feedback.
As I originally commented, I found ver 1.5 of SpyBot too active, and it does consume lots of resources. I removed it when I was doing all my activities re my shutdown crashes.
While I have plenty of resources, it overdoes things.
I still have the...
Bob,
Thanks for your reply.
You will find that Spybot ver 1.5 is a totally different program from 1.4. It's different as night and day.
Ver 1.5 is very "active". It apparently classifies DoubleClick as a "bad guy". Google of course now owns DoubleClick, and there has been lots of discussion...
I use a variety of security software to protect my system - XP Pro SP2, fully patched.
The programs include
1. AVG 7.5 Professional (paid) version
2. WinPatrol Plus (paid version)
3. Zone Alarm 7.0.408 (free version)
4. AVG Anti Rootkit (free)
5. Spyware Blaster (free)
6. SpyBot Search &...
Hi Linney,
I did start a new thread with the icon question in it.
There was a little typo in the thread name. But you will see it on the second pages of messages in this forum.
This message thread has really gotten to be a very large one. :-)
I save "stuff" by printing out to PDF, and keep a...
Hi Linney,
I have a good feeling about the problem resolution. But, I've had earlier times when the problem disappeared for a few days, and then returned. But, since I have done a very extensive REPAIR of XP, I have high hopes that the work I've done currently has indeed fixed things.
XP...
Freestone,
Thanks for your reply.
The URL you noted may be more applicable for an upgrade to XP, as what I ended up needing is in a different MS document - see below.
The following steps below were all that I had to do to get the update installation working properly. Just register a single...
Hi Linney,
Well, you are right on the button again.
The following steps below were all that I had to do to get the update installation working properly. Just register a single DLL. I would think that MS should consider making that part of their REPAIR process.
The 82 updates then all...
Hi Linney,
I've gotten some new info - the problem appears to be that the updates are failing to install, and may well be cured by the following.
Windows Updates Fails After Upgrading to WindowsXP

I had initially assumed...
I'm posting this as a separate message, since my prior thread has gotten very long in this area.
I successfully did a REPAIR of my XP Pro SP2 install, and there are a couple of issues that I would like to get info on.
After the REPAIR, I do of course need a large number of the updates that MS...
Well, I finally bit the bullet, and used the REPAIR mode of my XP Pro CD. The shutdown crashes returned in spades. All went reasonable smoothly, but it did take a looong time to do it all.
There is a minor glitch somewhere now. I needed of course to download all the updates since my SP2 XP Pro...
