If you are dual-booting, why don't you extract the data in XP to a partition accessible to the 98OS?

Create a local account on the PC's and remove them from the domain is one option. Another would be to just create a .reg file with the correct settings and have the users run the file before they use the PC.

Netbooks aren't as modular as regular notebooks so if the wifi card fails, you might have to have the whole motherboard replaced - or just use an external usb wifi card. Service and expandability would be my concerns with a netbook.

I don't believe adding a CA to your domain will negatively affect the current environment. As far as the firewall goes, you will still need to tell the workstations that access the firewall to trust your internal CA, which is probably just as much trouble as just adding the current certificate...
SP2 would be the way to go in most cases. It's more secure, and will allow you to get future updates if desired.

Interesting. I just ran into a simliar problem a few days ago and my research showed the Easeus software as one of the best solutions for this problem. Anyways, I used the demo for BootIt NG that I downloaded from here...
I would update the video driver first, but in my experience systems with XP and 256MB start to demonstrate this behavior. Toss a gig on ram in there and that should solve your problem.

Did you apply any Windows updates (could have been forced by MS w/ auto updates) the previous day? Perhaps your CMOS battery is going bad and some BIOS settings for the HD were reset. Worst case scenario strip the box down to a motherboard/cpu/RAM combo in the case with only the power supply...

How is your current hard drive connected to the system? If it's IDE and on the same cable as a DVD/CD drive or a flaky hard drive that will crater performance.
