This use to work for windows 98 which I tried last week, though I can't find this option in XP:
Connect up and power on your external hard drive
Right click on my computer -> click properties
Go to the Hardware tab and click the 'Device Manager' button
Expand the 'Disk drives' menu...

I ended up using the graphical chkdsk option through the properties -> tools tab and enabled "Automatically fix file system errors" which I believe is the same as running chkdsk /f at the command prompt and it worked perfectly!
Surprisingly finished in what seemed like not more than 10 seconds...

I will try running chkdsk later today after work and report back with the result.
I will also try that free program mentioned in that 'External USB Hard Drive not recognized by Windows' thread if chkdsk does not work.
