I think what I need clarification on is how to back up an "instance" of sql server. This is the recommendation before upgrading to 2005.
What does backing up an "instance" involve? Obviously, the user db's, but everything else as well? Is there a step by step FAQ that discusses this, and...

I have actually done this before, but it was a long time ago, and I didn't do it alone. Now, the sitation is little different, and I need to know the EXACT steps to take.
Does anyone have a FAQ or link that outlines migration...
Oh, one more thing, I am also trying to find a FAQ that covers just "general DBA" maintenance tasks - sort of what you would see under maintenance plans. Or do you think maintenace plans cover the basics?
For example, things such as:
clean up of msdb backup tables
automatic reindexing
etc...

I found a very good article on doing a performance audit on sql server on www.sql-server-performance.com... sheesh, there is a lot to cover, and this doesn't even include sql tuning, per se.

I am starting a new job next week. Part of what I am required to do is a "system diagnostic" on a SQL Server 2000 box to determine what areas can use improvement - this would include configuration settings, backup/recovery, sql tuning, etc... and anything else I may not have mentioned here...
