Okay, well I think I figured out what was wrong, and I'm amazed nobody else has had this problem. (Mabe nobody else is still using InDesign 2?) The issue was was the NumLock key. I've been using InDesign 2.0 for quite a while. I've never bothered to upgrade because 2.0 does what I need it do perfectly...until now!
