Weird. Have you tried updating firmware on both ends to see what happens? I heard that cisco (linksys) had some off issues with VPN's.
Might also want to make sure the DSL connection is set to bridged mode, otherwise it's another NAT you have to pass through.

I remeber hearing about some Linksys routers dropping PPTP connections. Have them flash their firmware to the latest version and see is that helps.
Also, some routers just don't allow for VPN. Netgear allows for 2 connections, though, even on their lowest-end model. Hope this helps,
