Another easy and cheap way is to copy all the data you want to transfer into one folder on the root of C: and the take the old HD and connect it to the new computer as a slave and then copy the data across...takes no time.

I had a similar problem in that I could not write to any media from a DVD/RW drive...
In My computer...right click on your drive and choose properties...
On the recording tab make sure "enable CD recording on this Drive" is checked.

I know this is off topic but we use SMTP mail as the MX records for our domain name point to our public IP address (not sure I explained that correctly but we don’t use POP mail)
