I'm looking for a method to retrieve the first 30 characters from every line in a file. I'm guessing maybe sed could accomplish this, but I'm taking the easy route and asking you the experts. Any help is greatly appreciated.

My Oracle HACMP stop script utilizes shutdown immediate to bring the db down. I have found on occasion that shutdown abort may be needed to bring the db down. Does anyone have a script that will utilize abort if immediate hangs?

I need to delete several lines from a file that fall before a certain line in the file. For example:
line 1
line 2
line 3
line 4
.
.
.
.
STARTUP
I need to delete all of the lines before the line that contains STARTUP.
Any help appreciated.
