So, remember I am just learning. What does the pink highlighting mean...what do you do about it...how can you tell how the image will really flatten if my printer prints incorrectly flattened?

Is there a fairly failsafe set of settings for pdf export? The file has transparency in several of the images, drop shadows, and multiply blend mode.
I know to use high resolution and high quality transparency, but am not sure whether to use [print], [press], [X-1a], or [X-3]; and if I should...
Not against a spot color -- a CMYK swatch. I may have it figured out, as it seems to be much less of a problem on the Epson 1280 than on my old Canon or the color laser printer. Is it possibly just a printer thing?
I have tried both of your suggestions. Both InDesign and pdf print the boxes. When exported as eps, tiff, jpg the file prints as intended.

I am doing my first "professional" job, and am running into two problems. Images placed from PS with transparency work beautifully until I add a drop shadow, then a lighter box prints around the image. This also happens when the image blend mode is set to multiply.
