Hello, Does anybody have a wiring diagram to configure a rj45(f) to db9 (m) adapter? It has to be wired as crossover (null-modem). Any info would be much appreciated.

sorry should have said we use solaris 8 in most cases, though newer servers are built with solaris 10 (when the application allows). emm no - typically the DBA's would not have access to the system console. Just remote access via telnet, ssh in some cases etc...

this often happens on our servers when there is a disconnect at the console port. What we do is ensure that all the keys on the front of the servers are in the locked position. This should hopefully sort your problem.

Thanks for your reply. Have found that it is a cooling issue after all - messages file was flagging thermal warnings and shutting down a few seconds later. Was a recent purchase by my organization so vendor is going to take it back for repairs. Once again thanks for your help. Gaz

Hi I have a Sun Ultra 80 W/S running Solaris 8 with the following spec: 4 x 450Mhz Sparc 4gb Ram 1 x Elite 3d gfx 1 x Expert 3d gfx Problem is that the machine sporadically shuts itself down without warning. Was thinking possibly a cooling issue - any ideas??

Yeah go for an ultra 5 or 10. I have an ultra 5 that I picked up a year or so ago on ebay for £20. Does the job fine - no problems whatsoever. Takes standard PC ide disks too which is a bonus... :-)

Not really a problem as such - more just curiosity.. When you do an iostat -En you get all the disk info, as well as a field labelled Predicted Failure Analysis. Does anybody know what the different levels mean? I'm assusming a value of 0 means the disk is operating normally. Thanks for any...

thanks for all your responses - i'll give it a go. its just proof of concept really - i need to test a windows backup but have no disk space to do a test restore anywhere except on a unix box. I'll see how i get on. Thanks

OK - I'm running veritas netbackup 4.5 data center edition running on solaris 8 and would like to do a test restore. The data to be restored was backed up from a windows2000 client, but i would like to restore it to a folder residing on different solaris machine. Is this possible?
