i have resolved this problem it was a problem with the master browser a conflict on my system where two computers thought they were the master browser.

i have the following in place
Full normal backup on a sunday to another server (file)
monday to friday are supposed to be incramental backups but when i come in the next day the media has not been written to. i have to do it manually.
What is append im thinking maybe it does not like...

all of a sudden when selecting view workgroup computers an error comes up on all machine.
When adding a printer or doing anything that needs to view the workgroup i cannot see it
the only thing thats changed in the last few days is i have set up routing on a server 2003.

OK i have installed server 2003 and when i connect the vpn at home and click start and run
when i put in my old server ip address is shows me my shared files and folders on the server.
when i put in the ip of the new server nothing
does server 2003 have to be configured as a terminal services...

i have server 2003 installed and its in per server mode at the moment, from what i understand it come with 5 cals and only five people can use this server for there files before the sixth person gets access denied.
My question is my other server is 2000 so...

Can someone please explaine to me the license modes of erver 2003 i cannot get my head around it.
I have around 70 pc's that will access this machine for different reasons and it will be my second server.
ah sorry i meant to say each switch uplink will be gig with maybe 24 10/100 connections and in my server room ill have a switch with 24 ports all being a gig.
as for them being in the same area i am not doing this im going to have 3 racks in different parts of the building.

OK this is my first real use of vpn as i just started this job and in my old role vpn and remote connections were nother dept, so could you simplify this a bit for me.
Oh by the way the allow local lan access does not make a difference if it is checked or unchecked

basically once the vpn has connected everything on the machine that runs from our server and the internet stops including email, antivirus network connections, files, ping the lot.
the vpn is cisco vpn client 4.0.5 (rel) and it was provided by the customer for connection into there network, i have noticed that the option to check or uncheck use local lan is checked.
Is this there lan or mine.

yeha i got that but its very in depth and i just started my nre job that involves using veritas backup exec and i have not used it before and it seems to be very complex comapred to windows backup.
But windows back up will not back up open files, otherwise it owuld have been perfect.
