And if you want to put your pictures together in a predetermined format you can use GIMP# (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-sharp/) which has a Picture Package plug-in like the one found in Photoshop.

If these files are still associated with GIMP, then this is a bug in the uninstaller. You should consider sending a big report to the gimp-win maintainers.

The thumbnails are not generated on-the-fly but are stored on disk. That's why your thumbnail looks ok, since it was generated from your picture before it got messed up.
You could try the resynthesizer plug-in (http://www.logarithmic.net/pfh/resynthesizer) but it won't be easy.
