    pdf - dull colours

    I would be willing to bet your problem with the dull colors has to do with your color mangement profiles. Check the info on your PDF to see what they are, and what you have set in Illustrator. Another possible effect, is the calibration of your monitor, lighting temperature (should be D50)...
