I've heard that there will be an external GoVault in next couple of months so I will wait for that. I've heard good things about the Promise cards so I will give that one a try first.
Thanks!
Dave
I setup my server about a year ago with a lot of help from some people here (http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1147359&page=1). My backup strategy has been to rotate offsite external USB HD's. They are kind of cumbersome though and I had a read failure recently, likey from bumping the...
I put my exchange, user shared folders, and sql data stores there. I guess I'll just proceed as if there isn't anything there and reformat it, then reinstall sbs. Do I have to delete and re-create the array first? Can't I just reformat it as a basic disk?
I have already installed SBS2003, with the OS on my RAID 1 (C:) and data stores on RAID 5 (E:). But during the SBS setup, I (stupidly) converted drive E: to a dynamic disk, then installed data stores on it. Since I can't convert a disk from dynamic back to basic, I would have to reinstall the OS...
I think I should probably start over then, since I converted the RAID 5 disks to dynamic. If I boot from the server assistant disk will that give me the option to format the drives on both arrays? The first time I did that I don't remember every seeing anything about formatting the RAID 5 disks...
It's going on a shelf once I get it to my office :)
I am currently installing the OS and have a question.
I ordered the server without an OS, and with a 2x36 GB RAID 1 in the media bay, and a 3x26 GB RAID 5 with a global hotspare. I started by using the Dell OpenManage server assistant. It...
It came today :) I had no idea what a tank it would be. I almost broke my back just moving it. I'm going to try and get my OS installed this weekend. Wish me luck! Thanks twwabw, technome and LawnBoy for all of the help.
Yeah, the issue LawnBoy mentions is one of the reasons. If I ever wanted to move to another server I would have to buy SBS all over again. The other reason is that Dell doesn't offer the SBS2003 upgrade. I have an old copy of SBS 4.5 (bought on ebay, never used), so I ordered SBS2003 Premium...
Looks like the server will be here on Friday [thumbsup2]
I asked for it without an OS, and configured with RAID 1 and RAID5. Will it come ready for me to just starting loading SBS2003, or will I have to format and setup the raid array's?
Also, I think I've read that Dell has some server...
I just spoke with them this morning. Basically, my setup should be fine. A lot of orthodontic practices have two (or more) offices so they really recommend using Termial Services for offices using one server but connecting from multiple locations. For a one office location they seem to think...
twwabw, I am ordering the Dell without an OS and will be installing SBS2003 Premium myself, so I will be able to partition as needed.
Thanks for the HIPPA info. I'll investigate further.
I'm going to start out at 2GB memory because my office is starting from scratch and will be slow at first...
BTW, would you have any recommendations on how to partition the drives?
SBS2003 premium with ISA, light Exchange use, mainly using a SQL based practice management program (dental office). About 10-15 users concurrently connected to the database. The practice management software tracks patient...
I didn't know that it was standard to divide the drives of a mulit-RAID setup over both of the channels. Admittedly, I know nothing about RAID configurations but for some reason that seems counterintuitive. What would be the downside of keeping the RAID 1 array on one channel and RAID 5 on...
Technome and twwabw, thanks the info. And thanks for the pictures twwabw. I'm glad you think that these are great servers for the money. I've been somewhat of a computer geek since the Vic20, building my own computers for years, but this is my first foray into the server world so I"m happy to...
So, the PERC4ei has 2 channels. I could use 1 channel for the media bay option (RAID1) and the other channel as a 1x8 RAID5. Is that correct? That sounds exactly like what I would want to do.
However, hen I try to configure it that way on the Dell site, it says I can't use the 4ei and have to...
I'm trying to configure a Poweredge 2800 on the Dell website with the following setup:
RAID 1 (2x36 GB) for OS
RAID 5 (4x36 BG and 1 hot spare) for data
But the only split backplane option I see is a "2X4 Hot-Pluggable Split Backplane,PE2800". Does that mean I can't have 2 ports on one channel...
