Sounds to me like Word is starting but it can't access the Word document you are trying to open. You can add the IUSR_machinename account to the security permissions on the folder where the document is stored and see if you have any luck that way.

Hmmm, tricky and I would say pretty stupid! XML was designed to make things much easier for you. Why don't you consider changing your XML structure to:

If you browse to the Servlet in your browser, do you get a security warning? If you do then the XMLHTTP object will fail when it tries to connect. You have to make sure that your certificate is trusted by the client and that there isn't a problem with the certificate.
