And then you'll either have to set the server up with native Macintosh protocols or use the Prosoft Engineering IPX client for Macintosh. Neither is too obnoxious to do, and the server parts are probably less obnoxious in the long run.
Actually, as part of our "different drummer" thing, we're still going strong on Netware as much as we can! That doesn't seem to be a Filemaker option, however...
Thanks for the info -- sounds really like the hardware isn't as much of an issue as it used to be. Perhaps I need to be...
Thanks for the tip. Was your mixed environment still running off an Apple server?
General: FM just announced Filemaker 5.5 (I think), which is OS X native. Now there's three alternatives for server platform! Good grief...
Workstations are mixed, but probably more Mac than PC. We've got Citrix, but never dreamed of using it for Filemaker ;-) I just asked 'cause we had a FM4 server that started to choke with >30 users (Beige G3 box); but the NT server replacement didn't do much better.

We've had a few requests to move various FM databases from around campus to a central server. It's been a while since I've checked, so let me ask again:
Which platform would be best for a general-access general-purpose Filemaker Pro server; Mac or NT? I'm more concerned about stability than...
In the past, we've used GNATbox on an old '486 from the junkpile. But with rather more work, you could implement complete Network Address Translation, port blocking, and DMZ/Private security zones using such a modest bax and FreeBSD unix.
I'm not particularly a Unix partisan, just that the...
Interesting. OpenSys, any problem with DAT that you know about? We're running DAT drives in the 12GB(native)/24GB(compressed) format with no troubles. Since all fits on one cart, we don't need an autoloader. One server also backs up two others. We don't do Unix, so don't know about that aspect...
Perusing our old software manual collection, I don't see any reference to this error message in either FM 2.1 or 3.0. I've not seen it in 4.0. My guesses: Are you trying to run FMP _Server_ instead of the Client program? We have seen an error when two copies of v. 4.0 are fired up simultaneously...
FWIW, I've got something similar which would work, and depending on IRQs, etc, doesn't even need separate hardware profiles. My docking station has two PCCard slots, in addition to those in the laptop. Hence the station has a NIC, bound to one IP on the office lan, and the NIC used in the laptop...
I'm not sure I entirely trust the Microsoft answer for Novell questions. For one thing, the profiles are placed by Client32 in the SYS:MAIL directory, not USERS.... at least on our server. I have no troubles with the profiles on our Netware servers, but those which go to our NT box are showing...
It's not NTUser.dat. The profiles are only copied up and down and merged, not corrected. Hence the problem described above. Tell the users not to keep stuff on the desktop ;-) We encourage ours to use their home directory (which is on the server) and keep a shortcut on the desktop, instead. The...
I've only used the backup rotation system (ver. 7.11), but I found the only sure way to make changes is to delete the existing rotation and re-create it...
