    how to insert an image with a transparent background?

    I'm just learning to use Illustrator at the moment and I need to insert an image from Photoshop to Illustrator. The image is circular and i need to lay it over a colour background in Illustrator but i can't seem to get rid of the white background when i insert it. Can anyone explain how to do it?
