Update:
Bought a 4.3.2 (after, installed Fedora Core 4, but failed to boot up) and updated the CD microcode.
Then, installed AIX 5.1. Now, I am on my way.
Thanks all who helped or answered my thread.
ps. No wonder 99% use Windows ;)
I really need aix 4.3.3. to upgrade the microcode.
Can anyone spare or burn a set for me? I will pay the cost or help a 'programming task' in return.
I am a very good coder for c++, java, c# among others, windows or unix.
hi p5,
I made a diag cd and updated system/service firmware after booting with it.
To update CD-ROM's microcode, I need to use 'web_microcode.bin'...Genucode to load the microcode (a bin file). But I dont know how to load/run the Genucode from diag cd boot session...
p5,
Appreciate your effort.
I will do the battery thing. Meanwhile, I think I will download and make that diag CD...maybe I could update microcode from there.
Will post my result later,
p5,
I tried to follow your steps. I could only get the small laptop sized grx card 90% out of the PCI lot, the other side seems bolted to the fan that I am not ready to break the whole motherboard apart, yet. Didnt take the battery out. I have a small metal uncover sometime ago, dont even...
btw, tried many times with combo of key presses and long waittings. At some point, I got this line:
Preserving 25152 bytes of symbol table [lft_loadpin32]
Without seeing that first, I powered off ;-)
So now, I will leave it overnight to see if it will turn itself into a windows or .net or...
Here's my current status...I think the cable may be ok. After taking keyboard/mouse off, I got further on the HyperTerminal:
/pci@fef00000/scsi@c/sd@0
RS/6000 Firmware
Version SPH00221
(c) Copyright IBM Corp. 2000 All rights reserved...
Finally got the cable tonight. It didnt come with any pin diagram chart. It's a female-female 9 pin.
Anyway after I connected the cable to a windows desktop, opened the HyperTerminal application with 9600 8-N-1, I booted the aix, I see a message showed "System Powering on.".
But....that's all...
Thanks Duuuuuke ;-)
1600x1200 looks fine with the dell monitor except very small font. Dont know why it wont pass the boot process, then it probabaly wont boot to 'diagnostic CD' either.
So for now, I will try again with the serial cable once I receive it.
Nothin is easy.
p5wizard,
Looks like there's hope :-)
The f1 (...f10) did nothing as I hit often.
So I will see if the hyperterm would work, then harddrive & grx display.
Thanks a lot. I will post back any progress soon.
Dont know why 18G would not work from the empty tape drive bay. I read 9G may work there.
Just ebayed a cable like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=64047&item=5782607820&rd=1
Hope it would do the trick.
so far is just pain and no fun.
Hope my non-ibm ultra3(U160) 18G scsi drive would not give me problem after the boot.
I have a graphics card came with the box(3000 something). I use a graphics monitor(WINDOWS) which boots up like 1600x1200 (or more) in SMS. mouse/keyboard are PC type.
From this site 'http://www.bigredradio.com/firmware.html', I download the spflash.img, copy to a floppy and did a boot from...
p5wizard,
Many thanks to your help.
Do you know aix 4.3.3 CD would boot from this around yr2k box with BOS level sh000808?
If not, where I could fetch a set of aix 3.2??
That seems the only option left.
I just thought about the sticker as well ;-) 'Labeling' was only after my initial failed trys without ...
It seems I need a BOS installed before updating anything or install aix 5.1. The SMS has a update utility but failed(not sure when to use that one).
Does anyone know if 7044-170 can boot...
One more detail:
on ibm site, it says to label the diskette "Volumn 1: Backup....." with a very long name. It might be that the bios/sms looks that 'backup' in label before doing any update? I cannot label that with the EXE (Ardi? which makes any image file for aix from windows) downloaded. I...
First of all...many thanks to all helps.
The CD(can be read from windows fine) and diskettes are brand new. I tried to make the microcode update diskettes again with the same result. I think I need a aix first before doing that ?!
I never passed the point to press any key. I always get the...
ok...I opened the metal plate and fixed the loose cable to the CD-ROM. And, made the CD-ROM bootable (option 2 after diskette).
The 'config' in SMS showed id=7,p1/z1
18210 MB id, lun=0,0
cd-rom id, lun=1,0
It seems the system found both harddrive and cd-rom, and gives it different 'lun'...
