Just a guess, but if you are installing it from an ova file, then it's creating a new vm instance, which would have a different hardware identifier. A vm footprint is based on the server/nics, but then has a virtualization 'overlay' to it. If it didn't, how would you think you could install...
I've seen some old threads on VMWare, are people still using it? If so, what is your experience with the quality of the calls? I'm specifically thinking TW here, something with a real time requirement.
