    Any value in a field in a formula

    basically what i want is, if there is any value in a certain field, that it will print "cut" on the report i tried: if {thefieldinmydatabse} = "*" then "cut" apparently the asterik doesn't work. what can i use, or how can i properly write this formula? thanks in advance!
