Hello,
We have a forest with an empty root domain, and a populated child domain. The child domain has abotu 35 DCs. One DC in each domain is 2012 R2, the rest are 2008 R2. We'd like to migrate all DCs to 2012 R2.
First off - any reason not to do this?
Second - would you guys recommend...
I am trying to edit my local hosts file - it seems that IE9 ignores the file, while firefox (and ping) does not.
For example, my hosts file has the following:
1.2.3.4 www.aol.com
1.2.3.4 aol.com
When I ping aol.com, it reads the hosts file:
C:\>ping aol.com
Pinging aol.com [1.2.3.4] with 32...
We have an account in our domain called "help". This account is solely used for resetting forgotten passwords, and is VERY restricted with GPO.
Is there any way to have this account not ever be locked out? We are on a 2008 R2 domain. Thanks.
Thanks,
Andrew

We have a 2008 R2 domain in a 2003 functional level forest. We will be removing the one 2003 domain left and then promoting the forest to 2008 R2 native mode.
We need to have one of our 2008 domains replicate over a firewall. After researching, there seem to be 3 ways to do it:
1. Open...
Is there any way to make RDP use a standart port (3389), but have the drive mapping and clipboard mapping functions use it's own separate port?
I am trying to limit access from home users through VPN - so they cannot map drive & clipboard, but still allow these features if connecting inside the...
Hello - I have a 2003 AD with a couple of 2008 R2 DCs. We have 11 sites, a DC at each site.
We have Not sure how or when this happened, but it appears some of the site info in DNS is missing on some domain controllers. There are replication issues, (RPC server not available) when trying to...
My company does not use DHCP - all IPs are hardcoded (a problem i have no authority to solve). We have 300 users moving from one location to another, and their IP addresses will need to be changed to one in a different subnet.
I will have a one-to-one mapping of IP addresses (old-->new).
My...
Our 2003 domain (with a few 2008 R2 DCs) is currently set up as follows:
Main Site - 2 DCs
11 Branch sites - 1 DC each
Every branch site has a site link set up between it and the main site.
Our main site will be going away, one of the branches will become the new main site. I am trying to...
I have a windows 2003 domain. I have added a new domain 2008 R2 controller in a new site. I do already have one fully-functional 2008 R2 DC in one of our other sites.
When I try to force a manual replication in Sites & Services, I get this generic error:
The following error occured during the...
I have a 2003 forest with a single domain. Functional level is Windows Server 2003.
I just did the schema update (forestprep followed by domain prep).
One of our remote site's 2003 DC failed. I did the metadata cleanup and I am attempting to add a replacement DC with the same name, but 2008...
Current setup:
-2003 domain, schema level 47 (2008 r2)
-1 Parent domain, 3 children
(Call them Parent, child1, child2, child3)
Planned setup:
I'd like to end up with a single domain in this forest. I'd like that domain to be child1.
The plan is to upgrade all child1 DCs to 2008 r2 before...
We have a 2008R2 AD. I am trying to configure it through the firewall. We had a 2003 AD working fine through the firewall. The differences I am reading about for 2008 are the Dynamic High ports.
I know of the NETSH commands to limit the scope of ports it can use so we don't have to open tons...
We use TriCerat screwdrivers to manage our printers. I have a computer policy in place (in Unfiltered) that is set to "Do not auto-create client printers". This worked fine for a while, and today all of a sudden all the users printers are being mapped via citrix, using the Citrix Universal Print...
I am setting up a brand new citrix xenapp farm. New domain, all 2008 r2. Two servers with RDS installed, also 2008 r2. The first server is my license server, and it is fully activated and got 150 user RDS CALs installed from microsoft. First server is working fine, shows 150 licenses available...
Building a new domain from scratch, 2008 R2 SP1. I build one server, promote it to a new DC/DNS with no problems.
When I add the second DC/DNS I am getting DNS failures and replication does not get set up correctly.
When I try to replicate, I get "RPC server is unavailable" errors.
This...
How would this list be alphabetized:
enviro testing
envirosafe inspections and consulting
enviro-tech services, inc
I am unsure how a hyphen affects positioning in an alphabetical list.
Thanks!
Thanks,
Andrew

I have some virtual servers with 2008 R2 VMs on them. When I try to clone them, they require reactivation - is this normal?
I am assuming it is sensing a hardware change, what could it be?
I am NOT trying to clone illegal copies of Windows 2008 R2, these are all legal copies. If I have to...
I have a windows 2003 domain that spans two firewall segments. I realized that one of my DCs had no network connection. This problem has been fixed, but I don't know how long the problem existed.
This is the only DC in the site, and it holds no FSMO roles.
The DC works fine for machines in...
I know it's mostly slang, but is there a term to describe the use of a noun as a verb?
Example: I got elbowed in the face!
My friend and I used to call this process "verbing".
nerd/programmer alert: We always said, since we called it "verbing" that it was the first and only recursive joke...
