We've been working with a Compaq 1600 with a similar problem. Run the system erase,, and then it won't boot from CD. Would be interested in a fix rather than running the system configuration from floppy.
I lost the ability to boot from CD following a Compaq 1600 system erase. We ran the system configuration utility from floppy, and then setup the array. Magically,,,, on the next boot,,,, it quite happily booted from the CD. Que pasa????
We noticed the 168 and 172 errors following a system erase and memory upgrade. After that,,,, we couldn't get into the system configuration utility on CD to tell it about it's memory. We can't boot from the CD. We did make floppy system configuration diskettes, and that solved the 168 and 172...
