I have tested this on the mainframe, and
the result is not 66, the result integer for 'A'
is 194 because 'A' is a decimal 193.
works fine!.

FUNCTION NUMVAL is for numeric values only, not alpha.
Does anyone know any other intrinsic functions or any other way to do it?

I do not use SQL in VisualAge Cobol,
but I have occasionally LNK2029@999 when prog A calls prog B and linkage area in prog B does not exactly match the number of referenced areas in prog A. And the number 999 to the right of the @ sign points to the length, ie,
if you have:
CALL 'B' USING X, Y...
