qmail is an excellent choice. Bernstein, the author of qmail, really knows how to write secure software. It takes some fiddling about to set it up, but when it's running it's running. Here are some useful links:

Booth POP and IMAP can be used with various forms of authentication. You might also connect via a secure channel, such as SSL. There are several forums dealing with IMAP; have a look at e.g. www.washington.edu/imap/
Thought that I would let the forum know that the fault turned out to be a missing entry in /etc/tcp.smtp. I had to list the IP-number of the choke firewall (the mailserver sits in a DMZ and I was attemping to inject via SMTP from a PC behind the choke.
Has the patch mentioned on:

I have installed mail and mostly got it working:

When one redirects e.g. the ouput of "ps faxl" to a file the right hand tail of the long lines are chopped off. Is it possible to set line-wrapping or to set the console width to something really big?
