I had the same problem, raised a thread but ended up answering the question myself. Look at Microsoft's knowledgebase at

basically the hyperlink needs to point at a shortcut (.lnk file) and this shortcut inturn...
Apologies, have sorted this out for myself - there was a Space ' ' at the end of the name of the Shortcuts (.lnk) removing these has solved the problem. How Stupid!!

Thanks for your help, have found the solution on Microsoft site which holds the info as a known error/problem. The solution is to point the hyperlink at a shortcut that then opens the .dot template. It carefully notes that you must not use the 'Browse' button to select this shortcut as Frontpage...
