TekTippy4U's suggestion to have ScanDisk run on start up sounds like a good idea.
FILExxx.CHK files and DIR0000xx directories are the result of cross-linked files and ScanDisk generates them when it cannot resolve the situation I believe.
It sounds like the computer may not be shutting down...
As suggested, it my be that your graphics card is being overwhelmed and providing some relief in the form of disabling Active Desktop and using no wallpaper may be of some aid.

As far as I know, the use of two monitors would require two video cards. If your ThinkPad is so-equipped and can get both it's own display and another monitor to function then you should check the Windows Help files. Start > Help > multiple display support = the information you need.
