Very interesting...first we should look for a log, it should be under c:\program files\veritas\backup exec\nt\data folder on the backup server. That should give some info on where the job stopped. Backup Exec Job Engine dies for no apparent reason.
I was having the same problem with one of my backup servers. I fixed it by removing the tape device driver in the control panel and use on of veritas's drivers for the device.
