As a follow up:
After many months of happily using Phoenix mail software my Outlook Express installation seems to have fixed itself through the automatic updates of Win2k. I'm guessing from this that whatever was causing the problem was a known issue that they just hadn't dealt with at the time...
Thanks...
I've been using Phoenix mail for a while now, it's not quite as versatile as OE but I do trust it to not die on me constantly.
I just opened up OE to have a go at your solution and the damn thing seems to have fixed itself!!! F***ing M$ weird sh**! I don't know, I really don't... You...

Thanks, I've got Phoenix Mail set up and working fine now.
Cheers for all the help. I do still wonder what happened to OE but really I couldn't give a rat's arse too much anymore since their help pages don't seem to have a clue, the program couldn't tell me and I'm not using something that's...
*laughs* jmatt, thanks for all your suggestions, I love your first idea which boiled down to 'your problem is that you are using Mircosoft software therefore it will by it's nature be crap' :)
I followed the instructions on those support links but to no avail. I was hoping that despite my error...

Hi folks,
I've been having hell trying to get Outlook Express 5 working after a system crash a month ago.
The problem is that it won't open messages, it just states 'There was an error opening this message
An error has occured' which I thought was very informative of it. Hmm.

I've tried finding an old email folder by searching for files with the .pst extentsion but with no luck. I'm at work and haven't tried...

What is the file type for Outlook Express emails?
I tried searching for .eml, .dbx, .bloomin'-everything-I-could-think-of with no luck at all to see if I could locate the files with the file search facility but with no luck...
Hi all,
About two weeks ago my user profile corrupted in Win2k pro. I made myself a new profile and things seem to be going okay (although the list of profiles doesn't seem to match the files that exist in 'documents and settings' but that's a different issue).
Basically, I need to be able to...
