Recently I had experience with a couple of ECS K7S5A-pro motherboards bought a few months apart, as part of a $79 2400+ Athlon XP bundle deal at Fry's.
One of the upgrades would've gone much more smoothly except that when I went to enter User Define heads/cylinders info the heads/cylinders/etc...
And I'd bet it was a Maxtor too, wasn't it?
After reading your story, I'd have put a $100 down on betting it was a Maxtor.
No offense to Maxtor, I still buy them, but it's spooky how I keep seeing these slow-read problems on them as they go out.
P.S. - During my follow up call to a different tech at Maxtor today, after explaining that the drive passes all the PowerMax tests with no code and will low level format etc. - but is simply too slow to use since for example it has now been about 24 hours since I started the FAT32 format and...
I've had several Maxtor drives fail in this way this year, perhaps many out there are. One was a 30gig DiamondMax Plus 40 model 53073U6 (Warranty ends Nov 03) and an older 20gig 7200rpm Maxtor, both IDE.
Both drives would eventually pass all the PowerMax tests as well as a low level format...
